Summary:1349459 Heat exchange elements PARAMOUNT GLASS MFG CO Ltd 14 July 1971 [16 July 1970] 32983/71 Heading F4S A heat absorbing device comprises a fin 1 in which is formed a U-shaped coolant-liquid channel which consists of limbs 2, 3 extending horizontally interconnected by an end piece 5. The coolant outlet limb 3 of the channel has at its outer end a port 9 constituting an overflow so that a predetermined coolant level is maintained in the limb 3. The coolant enters the limb 2 of the channel via ports 8 from a duct 6 and the coolant overflowing through port 9 drains into a duct 7. As shown the limbs 2, 3 of the channel are interconnected by a solid web 4. Additional heat transfer surface comprising a solid fin (15 or 18, Figs. 4 to 6) may extend upwardly from the limb 3. In use, the device, which may comprise a plurality of the hollow fins spaced apart along the ducts 6, 7, is positioned between orifice groups (11, 12, Fig. 3) of an apparatus for producing glass filaments, the fins serving to cool the cones of molten glass forming at the orifices.
