Summary:1299930 Seaming non-metallic sheet material E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 17 April 1970 [21 April 1969] 18499/70 Heading B5K Flexible strips 3, 4 of plastics or elastomeric material having marginal interlocking portions 5, 6 are joined by progressively mating the portions 5, 6 with a slide fastener means 1 while simultaneously exuding a liquid bonding medium between those parts of the portions 5, 6 being mated. The portions 5, 6 comprises staggered projections 15 and channels 16 adapted to mate by introduction of the projections of one portion into the channels of the other portion. Each projection 15 and channel 16 may have the configuration of a trapezoid, a dog leg or a mushroom. A preferred configuration is shown in Fig. 4. The portions 5, 6 may be formed as separate strips and subsequently attached by heat sealing, dielectric welding, solvent welding or cement bonding to the strips 3, 4. The means 1 is drawn by a handle 2 and is provided with passages 7, 8 having slots opening in opposite sides of the means 1, projections 9 and channels 10 to guide the portions 5, 6 into engagement and guide projections 11 to assist tracking of the portions 5, 6. The liquid bonding medium is fed from a reservoir (not shown) into the handle 2 and passes through a passage 13 in the means 1 and out through an opening 12 to bond the portions 5, 6. The bonding medium may be an adhesive or a solvent for the material of the strips. If a solvent is used, it may contain in solution material of which the strips are composed. The invention is applicable to joining sheets, in the field, to form liners for ponds, pits, reservoirs and swimming pools. Specified materials for the strips are a chlorosulphonated polyethylene with a bonding medium comprising trichloroethylene containing chlorosulphonated polyethylene; a copolymer of ethylene/proprylene or ethylene/ propylene/nonconjugated diene having only one readily polymerizable double bond and containing 6-22 carbon atoms; butyl rubber; styrene/butadiene rubber; neoprene; polyvinyl chloride; polyvinyl acetate; vinyl chloride/ vinyl acetate copolymer; vinyl chloride/acrylonitrile copolymer; and polyvinyl chloride blended with butadiene/acrylonitrile copolymer. A specified adhesive comprises methyl ethyl ketone, tetrahydrofuran and thermoplastic polyurethane.
