Summary:Aspects of the disclosure relate to a trailer having a frame suitable for transporting an item, such as an oil drilling pipe. The trailer includes a boom which may be raised from the trailer and support cables used to move the pipe from the trailer to a storage or other location. The boom is raised and lowered by a hydraulic system comprising a primary cylinder and a secondary cylinder, each of which is attached to a lift assist assembly. The lift assist assembly provides greater leverage than would otherwise be available for the maximum size and weight of the load available for a given (fixed) maximum length of trailer. In this manner, the boom can be raised to greater heights, while maintaining horizontal distance, than otherwise. The lift assist assembly may be incorporated into an original manufacture or added in a retrofit application. Methods of use are also disclosed.
