The invention relates to a process and the respective installation for thermal treatment of granular solids, in particular for producing aluminum oxide from aluminum hydroxide, wherein the solids are heated in at least one preheating stage and then reacted in a reactor at 700 to 1400°C. In at least one preheating stage, the average temperature gradient of the solids amounts to <15K/s and the dwell time of the solids amounts to =15 s. L'invention concerne un procédé et une installation respective pour le traitement thermique de matières solides granulaires, en particulier pour produire de l'oxyde d'aluminium à partir d'hydroxyde d'aluminium. Selon le procédé, des matières solides sont chauffées dans au moins une étape de préchauffage puis mises en réaction dans un réacteur à une température de 700 à 1 400 °C. Dans au moins une étape de préchauffage, le gradient de température moyen des matières solides s'élève à moins de 15 K/s et le temps de séjour des matières solides est supérieur ou égal à 15 s.
