Disclosed are methods of functionalizing lignin using reactive extraction. The invention also generally relates to functionalized lignin. An examplary method for producing functionalized lignin is disclosed, which comprises: providing a residue comprising lignin and cellulose; subjecting the residue to a liquid comprising an organic compound, thereby forming a first mixture; wherein the subjecting is performed at a first temperature of about 100°C or less; and wherein the first mixture comprises: a first liquid fraction comprising solubilized functionalized lignin, wherein the solubilized functionalized lignin is functionalized with the organic compound; and a first solid fraction comprising cellulose. L'invention concerne des procédés de fonctionnalisation de la lignine au moyen d'une extraction réactive. L'invention concerne également de manière générale la lignine fonctionnalisée. Le procédé donné à titre d'exemple pour la production de lignine fonctionnalisée consiste à : fournir un résidu comprenant de la lignine et de la cellulose ; soumettre le résidu à un liquide comprenant un composé organique pour former ainsi un premier mélange, cette étape étant mise en oeuvre à une première température, inférieure ou égale à environ 100°C ; le premier mélange comprenant : une première fraction liquide comprenant de la lignine fonctionnalisée solubilisée, la lignine fonctionnalisée solubilisée étant fonctionnalisée à l'aide du composé organique ; et une première fraction solide comprenant de la cellulose.
