SUPPORTING MULTIPLE ATTENTION-BASED, USER-INTERACTION MODES

The present invention monitors a user's activities to determine how much attention he is paying to one or more devices. Based on the information gathered (300, 302) about the user's current "attention profile," a "user-interaction parameter" is set (304) that reflects where the user's attention is focused and, ideally, how much of his attention is given to each device. Then, based on the user-interaction parameter, the user interface of at least one of the user's devices is configured (306) to optimize the user's interactions, given the amount of attention he is currently giving to this user interface. If the user is giving the majority of his attention to the television (114), for example, then the user interface of a companion device (108, 116) can be configured to emphasize the types of interactions available to a user who is not actively watching the companion device (108, 116). La présente invention surveille les activités d'un utilisateur afin de déterminer l'attention qu'il porte à un ou plusieurs dispositif(s). Sur la base des informations collectées (300, 302) sur le « profil d'attention » actuel de l'utilisateur, un « paramètre d'interaction avec l'utilisateur » est défini (304), et reflète le point sur lequel l'attention de l'utilisateur est focalisée et, idéalement, quel niveau d'attention est porté à chaque dispositif. Ensuite, sur la base dudit paramètre d'interaction avec l'utilisateur, l'interface utilisateur d'au moins l'un des dispositifs de l'utilisateur est configurée (306) pour optimiser les interactions de l'utilisateur, selon le niveau d'attention qu'il porte à cette interface utilisateur. Si l'utilisateur porte la majeure partie de son attention au téléviseur (114), par exemple, l'interface utilisateur d'un dispositif complémentaire (108, 116) peut alors être configurée pour mettre l'accent sur les types d'interactions disponibles pour un utilisateur qui ne regarde pas activement ledit dispositif complémentaire (108, 116).
