A two-stage punch accomplishes the two-step process of sheet deformation and nut flaring to attach the nut to the sheet in a single stroke of an assembly press. The punch comprises an outer cylindrical sleeve which captivates a resiliently biased center punch. When the punch is moved downward into contact with the sheet, an embossing ring on the sleeve deforms the sheet material around an aperture in the sheet. When the punch is moved farther downward, a pointed end of the center punch extends beyond the embossing ring and into forcible contact with the nut. The nut is thereby flared capturing the sheet between flared edges of the nut and a nut flange. La présente invention concerne un poinçon bi-étagé qui réalise le procédé en deux étapes consistant en une déformation de tôle et un évasement d'écrou, pour fixer l'écrou à la tôle, en une seule course d'une presse à assembler. Le poinçon comprend un manchon cylindrique externe qui enserre un poinçon central sollicité élastiquement. Lorsque le poinçon est déplacé vers le bas jusqu'à venir au contact de la tôle, un anneau d'emboutissage, sur le manchon, déforme le matériau de la tôle autour d'une ouverture dans la tôle. Lorsque le poinçon est encore davantage descendu, une extrémité pointue du poinçon central se déploie au-delà de l'anneau d'emboutissage et entre en contact forcé avec l'écrou. L'écrou est alors évasé, gardant prisonnière la tôle entre ses bords évasés et son embase.
