The present invention relates to the prevention of hydrate agglomerates. Compounds of the formula: (see above formula) and compositions thereof are provided, as are methods for inhibiting the formation of hydrate agglomerates in an aqueous medium (wherein X- is a halide or a carboxylate and is only present when R3 is present; Y is (CH2)q, q is 1 to 8; R1 is C n H2n+1, benzyl or H, n is 1 to 12; R2 is a C4 to C22 alkyl; and R3 is C m H2m+1, benzyl or H, m is 0 to 12; with the proviso when R1 is methyl or H, R3 is not H and m is not 0).
