The invention provides novel lithium-mixed metal materials which, upon electrochemical interaction, release lithium ions, and are capable of reversibly cycling lithium ions. The invention provides a rechargeable lithium battery which comprises an electrode formed from the novel lithium-mixed metal materials. Methods for making the novel lithium--mixed metal materials and methods for using such lithium--mixed metal materials in electrochemical cells are also provided. The lithium-mixed metal materials comprise lithium and at least one other metal besides lithium. Preferred materials are lithium-mixed metal phosphates which contain lithium and two other metals besides lithium. De nouveaux matériaux de type lithium/métal mixte sont divulgués. Ces matériaux libèrent des ions lithium par interaction électrochimique et peuvent les recycler de manière réversible. Dans la présente invention, on divulgue une pile rechargeable au lithium comprenant une électrode formée des nouveaux matériaux de de type lithium/métal mixte et des méthodes pour fabriquer ces nouveaux matériaux et les utiliser dans des cellules électrochimiques. Les matériaux de type lithium/métal mixte contiennent du lithium et au moins un autre métal que le lithium. De préférence, ces matériaux sont de type lithium/phosphates de métal mixte et contiennent du lithium et deux autres métaux que le lithium.
