Summary:A method of forming a lining layer in a cathode shell of an electrolytic aluminum cell including the following steps: filling the cathode shell with a powdere d material, leveling of said powdered material, positioning of a layer of dust-insulatin g material and conducting steps of static and dynamic compaction. In the static compaction step, a working element of static compaction is successively moved over the lining layer. In the step of dynamic compaction, a working element of dynamic compaction is moved over the entire width of the lining layer with the static load being continuously applied on the working element of dynamic compaction.
