LASER CALIBRATION APPARATUS AND METHOD

A method (140) and system (10) of determining scanner coordinates to accurately position a focused laser beam (32a, 32b). The focused laser beam is (32a, 32b) scanned over a region of interest (e.g. an aperture (34)) on a work- surface (36) by a laser scanner (22, 24). The position of the focused la...

Summary:A method (140) and system (10) of determining scanner coordinates to accurately position a focused laser beam (32a, 32b). The focused laser beam is (32a, 32b) scanned over a region of interest (e.g. an aperture (34)) on a work- surface (36) by a laser scanner (22, 24). The position of the focused laser beam (32a, 32b) is detected by a photodetector either at predetermined intervals of time or space or as the focused laser beam (32a, 32b) appears through an aperture (34) in the work surface (36). The detected position of the focused laser beam (32a, 32b) is used to generate scanner position versus beam position data based on the position of the laser scanner (22, 24) at the time the focused laser beam (32a, 32b) is detected. The scanner position versus beam position data can be used to determine the center of the aperture or the scanner position coordinates that correspond with a desired position of the focused laser beam (32a, 32b).
