Summary:A telephone providing easy retrieval of telephone directory for a user. The telephone comprises a storage section for storing the names and the telephone numbers correlated with the names, an operating section including a plurality of numeral keys assigned with different characters, and a control section for retrieving a name including the assigned character of the key of the operating section depressed by the user for a specified time or longer and displaying the retrieved name on a display section. The user can make a transition to a telephone directory mode and designate a key word for retrieval through a simple operation of depressing a numeral key for a specified time or longer.
