Summary:The invention relates to a coating material for forming a vitreous coating film, characterized by comprising compounds represented by the following general formule (1) to (3): R1pSi(OR2)4-p (1), R2(OSi(OR2)2)qOR2 (2), M(OR3)r (3) wherein R1 is a polymerizable organic group; R2 is an alkyl having up to four carbon atoms; R3 is an alkyl having up to six carbon atoms; p is an integer of 1 to 3; q is an integer of 1 to 10; M is a metal ion having a valence of 3 or 4; and r is an integer of 3 or 4 according to the valence of M, provided when each compound contains more than one group of R1, R2, or R3, then these may be the same or different. This material forms a vitreous coating film which has sufficient flexibility, is excellent in the control of film thickness in a region of the order of micrometer, and rapidly cures to give a cured film having high adhesion to the substrate and excellent resistance to organic solvents. The invention also relates to a coating method using said material and to a coater.
