Summary:The present invention relates to an automatic respiration system (1) involving positive airway pressure. The inventive device (1) comprises equipment (2) for measuring the breathing gas flow and comparing it with a threshold value. Further equipment (3) is provided for screening any obstructive respiratory impairment. An assessment unit (4) is provided for assessing the measurement values and determines whether it is a case of normal breathing or obstructive respiratory impairment or non obstructive respiratory impairment. Depending on the results provided by the assessment unit (4), the positive airway pressure is either maintained or modified. According to the invention, the breathing gas flow as well as the obstruction of the respiratory tract are continuously measured, thereby enabling the positive airway pressure to be individually adjusted to various states of the patient.
