Summary:The addition of carbon centered free-radicals to the pendant, site isolated styr yl moieties of divinylbenzene rich copolymers is described. Such copolymers obtained commerc ially or through suspension polymerization of technical grade divinylbenzene are highl y crosslinked and porous materials of high surface area with a high degree of acce ssible unreacted vinyl groups. These unsaturated compounds are subject to free-radical reactions under various conditions with classes of small organic molecules to yield spacer bearing polymeric reagents. Thus, carboxylic acid, mono and dicarboxylic acid ester, orthoformate, alcohol, amide, lactam, amidine, substituted urea, imides, amines, crown ether and polyethyl ether bearing solid-phase reagents are obtained. Analysis th rough FTIR, solid-state NMR elemental analysis and other chemical techniques are used to describe the possibilities of the adducts obtained.
