Summary:A binocular head mounted display unit (10) utilizing a single display (28) a nd binocular optical system (30) is shown for projecting an enlarged image of displayed information in the direct line of the user's eyes, while maintaining the user's peripheral vision fre e from obstruction to allow the user to selectively focus on the virtual image or n ot. The binocular optical system (30) directs the user's eyes inward at an angle that is natural for a person viewing an object at a dista nce that is less than infinity. Further, the binocular o ptical system (30) automatically compensates for variations in the interpupillary distance s of various users, wherein those variations may be as g reat as one inch. This head mounted display unit (10) is suitable for a variety of a pplications, including virtual reality applications, as well as a display for a compact portable computer.
