ELECTROSURGICAL HANDPIECE INCORPORATING BLADE AND CONDUCTIVE GAS FUNCTIONALITY

An electrosurgical handpiece (20) applies electrical energy to a blade electrode (22) to accomplish blade electrosurgery or to a transfer electrode and nozzle (34) to transfer electrical energy in arcs in a flowing gas to accomplish conductive gas electrocoagulation. The blade electrode (22) may be...

Summary:An electrosurgical handpiece (20) applies electrical energy to a blade electrode (22) to accomplish blade electrosurgery or to a transfer electrode and nozzle (34) to transfer electrical energy in arcs in a flowing gas to accomplish conductive gas electrocoagulation. The blade electrode (22) may be selectively extended to conduct blade electrosurgery and withdrawn when conductive gas electrocoagulation is accomplished. Finger activated switches (28, 30) on the handpiece (20) control the application of electrical energy to the blade electrode (22) and the application of gas to the nozzle (34) and the electrical energy to the transfer electrode (34). A cord (36) includes a tubing (44) for supplying gas to the handpiece (20). The cord (36) also includes a multiconductor cable (50) for conducting electrical energy to the electrodes and conducting control signals to an electrosurgical apparatus (38) which delivers the electrical energy and the gas.
