Summary:Condensation Copolymers Containing Bis-Methine Moieties And Products Therefrom A composition useful for molding into articles such as food containers, soft drink bottles, cured structural plastics and the like, comprising molding or fiber grade linear or unsaturated polyester or polycarbonate having copolymerized therein a total of from 1.0 to about 5,000 ppm, of the reactant residue moieties of one or a mixture of bis-methine reactants of the formula M1=HC-Ar1-CH=M2 wherein Ar1 is an unsubstituted or substituted 1,4 phenylene radical; and M1 and M2 are the same or different and each is a disubstituted methylene group having the structure or wherein R1 is -?O-R3, -?-X-R4, , SO2-X-R4, or -Ar2-R4; and R is -?-X-R4 or -Ar2-R5; wherein R3 is hydrogen, allyl or an unsubstituted or substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl or phenyl radical; X is a divalent alkylene, cycloalkylene or phenylene radical or a combination thereof which may include within the divalent chain one or two atoms or radicals selected from -O-, -S-, -SO2, , or wherein R6 is an unsubstituted or substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl or phenyl radical; R4 is a group that is reactive with one of the monomers from which the condensation polymer is prepared; Ar2 is an unsubstituted or substituted phenylene or heterocyclic arylene radical; R5 is hydrogen, R4 or -X-R4; wherein the bis-methine moiety absorbs radiation significantly in the range of 250 to 390 nm and is non-extrsctable from said polymer and is stable under the conditions the polymer is prepared or processed. le0506F
