Summary:A ratchet system (10) includes a "T" shaped stopengaging member (50) mounted in a plane (72) perpendicular to a rotating spindle (22) and parallel to a circular carrier member (28) having stop members (40) mounted on the periphery and rotating with the spindle (22). The stem (52) of the "T" member (50) is rotatably mounted in housing (60) surrounding the spindle (22), and upon selective rotation the ends (54a, 54b) of the cross-bar (54) of the "T" member engage the stop members (40) to prevent rotation in a selected direction. The cross-bar (54) transmits the engagement force directly to a recess (70) in the inner wall of the housing (60). A handactuated knob assembly (82, 94) located outside the housing (60) is connected to the "T" member stem by a resilient bushing (100) which provides a restoring force to return the "T" member (50) to a stop engagement position following deflection by stop members (40) travelling in a direction counter to that intended to be prohibited.
