Summary:The invention relates to new polycyclic compounds substituted on the A-ring. More particularly, the invention concerns new polycyclic compounds of the general formula /I/ < IMG > /I/ wherein R1 is methoxy or halogen and R2 is hydrogen; or R1 is hydrogen and R2 is halogen and acid addition salts thereof. According to another aspect of the invention the new compounds of the general formula /I/ are prepared by reacting compounds of the general formula /II/ < IMG > /II/ wherein R1 and R2 are as defined above, with 3,4,5 -trimethoxy-benzoic acid or a derivative thereof capable of acylation. According to still another aspect of the invention there are provided pharmaceutical compositions comprising as an active ingredient a compound of the general formula /1/. The compounds have phosphodiesterase inhibiting activity.
