RUBBER DISPERSIONS

A stable, flowable dispersion of rubber in the form of discrete particles having an average diameter of from 100 to 3,000 nm in organic liquids which comprises: A) as rubber, from 1 to 20 % by weight, based on the total weight of the dispersion, of a crosslinked homopolymer or copolymer of a C1-C10...

Summary:A stable, flowable dispersion of rubber in the form of discrete particles having an average diameter of from 100 to 3,000 nm in organic liquids which comprises: A) as rubber, from 1 to 20 % by weight, based on the total weight of the dispersion, of a crosslinked homopolymer or copolymer of a C1-C10 alkylacrylate; B) from 0 to 20 % by weight, based on the total weight of the dispersion, of water in the form of a water-in-oil emulsion; and C) as continuous organic phase, from 99 to 60 % by weight, based on the total weight of the dispersion, of a) a C1-C10 alkylacrylate or alkylmethacrylate, or b) a mixture of from 85 to 50 % by weight of styrene or .alpha.-methylstyrene and from 15 to 50 % by weight of acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile or a C1-C6 alkylacrylate or alkylmethacrylate, or c) a mixture of from 85 to 50 % by weight of a C1-C10 alkylacrylate or alkylmethacrylate and from 15 to 50 % by weight of acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile and/or styrene, wherein a), b), and c) can optionally contain up to 60 % by weight of a liquid optionally halogenated hydrocarbon, and a process for its manufacture. The dispersions of the invention can be polymerised and cured, and may contain reinforcing fillers, pigments or other additives. They are suitable for the production of impactresistant coatings, or of castings having enhanced resistance to ageing.
