Summary:Novel benzoxazole derivatives of formula I I wherein the group -CR1R2R3 is in the 5- or 6- position of the benzoxazole nucleus, R4 is a phenyl group optionally substituted in any position by one or more C1-6 alkylsulphonyl, halogen, C1-6 alkyl, C1-6 alkoxy, C1-6 haloalkyl, nitro, C2-7 acyl, hydroxy, amino, C1-6 alkylamino or C2-7 acylamino groups or optionally substituted in two adjacent positions by methyleneor ethylene-dioxy, R1 is hydrogen or C1-6 alkyl, R2 is hydrogen and R3 is a nitrile or carboxy group, or a salt, ester, amide or hydroxamic acid derivative thereof, are described. Also described is a process for preparing such compounds, comprising reducing a compound of formula I above wherein R1, R3 and R4 are as defined above, and R2 is halogen, hydroxy or C2-7 acyloxy. These compounds possess analgesic, antipyretic and/or anti-inflammatory activity, or are useful an intermediates for the preparation of compounds which do have such activity.
