Summary:The invention relates to a method for generating hydrogen from biogenic matter, especially refuse. Spore-forming bacteria degrade the biogenic matter anaerobically and in the dark, thereby generating hydrogen. Hydrogen can be liberated or generated in a very effective manner by heating bacteria at least temporarily to such a degree that methanogenic bacteria are killed. Alternatively or additionally thereto, the bacteria are rinsed with oxygen or air in order to stimulate hydrogen generation and/or suppress methanogenic bacteria.
