The prodn. of tert. amines with carbonate and urethane gps. and opt. OH gps. comprises 1- or 2-stage reaction of: (a) a polyol component contg. polyhydric alcohol(s) of formula Q(OH)n (I) and (b) an amine component contg. prim.-tert. diamines of formula (II) with (c) carbonates of formula (III), urea, phosgene or chloroformate derivs. of (I). The amts. of (a) and (b) are equiv. to a mole ratio of (OH):(prim. amino) = (4:1)-(16:1), and the amt. of (c) used is 0.5 mole per mole (b) plus a further 0.2-0.5 mole per mole OH gps. in (a). In formulae, Q = residue obtd. by removing n OH gps. from a n-hydric, opt. ether gp.-contg. aliphatic alcohol with a mol.wt. of 90-400; n = 2 or 3; A = 2-6C aliphatic hydrocarbylene with at least 2C atoms between the N atoms; R , R = 1-4C alkyl; or both together with the N atom and opt. other hetero atoms may form a 5- or 6-membered satd. heterocycle which is inert w.r.t. reactant (c); R = 1-4C alkyl or Ph; or both together = 2-3C alkylene. Also claimed are tert. amines obtd. by this process.
