Summary:The appts. retains and separates material escaping uncontrolled from a borehole in the seabed. A bell-shaped sleeve is positioned on the surface to enclose the contaminated zone and prevent the escaping material spreading. This forms a hollow chamber connected to a vacuum source, so that a reduced pressure is maintained inside the chamber. The dia. of the sleeve mouth can be determined by a formula taking into account the sea depth and the depth of immersion.
