The microcapsule may be prepared (a) by dissolving the polycarbodiimide in an inert solvent, dispersing a core material in the resulting solution and introducing this dispersion in a shear gradient into an immiscible liquid phase in which an isocyanate reactive polyamine is present or which is added thereto, (b) by dissolving the polycarbodiimide in a solvent having a boiling point below 100‹ C. or which forms an azeotrope boiling below this temperature, dispersing or dissolving a core material in the resultant mixture which is then dispersed into a liquid immiscible with the solvent and heating the solvent to evaporate the solvent, or (c) by dissolving the polycarbodiimide in a solvent, dispersing the core material in the resulting solution and adding a precipitant for the polycarbodiimide. A carboxylic acid or copolymer thereof or an amine may be added to the dispersion of the microcapsules to modify the polycarbodiimide shell.
