Summary:1428662 Additives for lubricants ETHYL COOPER Ltd 9 March 1973 [22 March 1972] 13431/72 Heading C5F [Also in Division C2] Antioxidant/antiwear additives for lubricants comprise the product of reacting (I) a C 8-12 non-conjugated cycloalkadiene, -triene or -tetraene optionally bearing one of more alkyl, alkoxy or hydroxy substituents, with (II) a compound of formula (where R1 and R2 are organic groups) and optionally with (III) S, P 2 S 5 or a mercaptan, phenol, thiophenol, thiocyanate or carboxylic acid. III may be reacted either with I prior to the reaction with II provided that at least one double bond of I is left unreacted, or with the reaction product of I and II when it contains residual unsaturation. From 1 to n moles of II may be used per mole of I, n being the number of double bonds in I. In comparative examples, lubricant additives comprise the products of reacting O,O-diisobutyl phosphorodithioate with dicyclopentadiene, 1,3 - cyclooctadiene, cycloheptatriene and cyclododecene.
