Summary:Synthetic ester lubricant which is an ester of a polyol and a 4-22C carboxilic acid contains, as an anti-oxidant, a complex alkali metal or rare earth metal organophosphorous cpd. in which eh atomic ratio of said metla to P is >=0.8:1. The anti-oxidant is a salt of the metal base and a complex organophosphorus mixed acid ester of (a) a polyol free of beta-H atoms (e.g. pentaerythritol), (b) a 4-22C acylating agent (e.g. octanoic acid) and (c) a polybasic P acid which is H3PO4, h3PO3 or a lower alkyl phosphonic acid or an ester or partial ester of one of these acids or an amide of H3PI3 or of phosphonous acid. The anti-oxidant is effective at elevated temp. without adversely affecting the corrosivity or load-bearing capacity of the lubricant.
