Summary:1352235 Carbon black CABOT CORP 24 Sept 1971 [25 Sept 1970 7 Dec 1970] 44688/71 Heading C1A [Also in Division C3] An oil furnace carbon black has a BET N 2 surface area of less than 350 m2/gm, a nigrometer scale value of less than 81À5 and a dispersion rating of at least 80%. Methods of determining these parameters are given in the Specification. Such a black may be prepared via a process in which hydrocarbon feedstock is injected as a plurality of coherent streams into the periphery of an accelerated stream of combustion gases, followed by an appropriate quenching and separation steps. The black has properties approaching those of channel black, and may have a preferred dispersion rating of 90% and a DBP absorption value of 40 to 150 lbs. preferably less than 80 lbs./ 100 lbs. of black. The black is used as a pigment in halogen containing vinyl resin compositions in an amount of 0À1 to 5% by wt., of the resin. The resin is preferably a homopolymer or copolymer of vinyl chloride which may be in a rigid or flexible form. The resin may be in plastisol form and the composition may contain a plasticiser, e.g. dioctyl phthalate, in an amount of 2-50% by wt. of the resin. When a plasticizer is used, a masterbatch composition containing more than 15% by wt. of the plasticizer of carbon black may be made up, before the resin composition is formed.
