Summary: | 1311743 Control of DC motors CLARK EQUIPMENT CO 4 June 1970 [30 June 1969] 26934/70 Heading H2J A diode 40 is placed in series with the armature 10A of a chopper controlled D.C. motor 10 and it is stated that it can serve to pass part of the motor armature current in its reverse biased condition due to its long reverse recovery time. Initially capacitor 37 is charged to the supply voltage, and when SCR, or thyristor, 20 is fired the motor draws current, and the capacitor discharges inducing a negative voltage at C by means of saturable transformer 38, forward biasing 40. As the capacitor discharges further, diode 40 ceases to be forward biased, but continues to pass current due to its recovery time. When transformer 38 is saturated on the negative-going swing of the voltage across 37, SCR 20 is quenched and 40 is again forward biased, since 38 is saturated, subsequently becoming reverse biased as capacitor 37 charges again. Fig. 4 (not shown), displays the voltage waveforms at the points A, B, C, and interval g-h represents the time during which the potential at C is kept low by the diode 40 inconsequence of its reverse recovery time. The voltage at C can thus be kept low at all times. The chopping frequency is adjusted by potentiometer 35, through which capacitor 36 is charged to trigger unijunction transistor 33. In Fig. 2 (not shown) a thyristor controlled quenching circuit is used, and an inductor (99) between the motor field winding and the saturable transformer delays the forward biasing of the diode (90). The saturable transformer 38 is of the square loop core type. |
