In the invention which is, in particular, for the separation of a combustible mixture of coal, pyrite and rock refuse, the vibrating trough has a gas-permeable material bed and a material feeder and material removal elements at both ends, the heavy fraction of the bulk material being conveyed on the vibrating trough in one direction and the light fraction being fluidised and flowing off above the heavy fraction in the other direction, the separation of light and heavy material parts is to be further improved. This is achieved in that the material bed (5) is gas-impermeable at the output end (6) for the heavy fraction and in that in and/or in front of this region at least one transverse wall (7, 7', 7'') is provided to cause bulk material parts located above the heavy material layer to back up.
