Summary:A mechanical vibration or acoustic signal source (26) is applied to the pipework carrying fluid. A sensor (30) close to the pipework detects the vibrations after passing through the fluid. Data processing apparatus (40) allows the analysis of the sensor signals to determine information on the polyphase mixture of gas and liquid and the speed of displacement of gas bubbles within the liquid. This information is used to control the position of a valve (16) in order to regulate the flow rate in accordance with the storage capacity of the vessel connected to the pipework.
