Summary:A parting composition contains alpha-olefin oligomer having a viscosity in the range of about 1-3 cs at 450 DEG F. The parting composition in one aspect can be blended with a fatty ester or fatty alcohol. The parting composition is useful for the continuous casting of molten metal such as aluminum or aluminum alloy, which may contain lithium. A casting process for continuously casting molten metal, particularly containing lithium, through a mold or header includes applying a parting lubricant containing alpha-olefin oligomer. The lithium-containing alloy may be continuously cast by direct chill with a direct chill coolant which is a moisture barrier liquid employing the disclosed parting compositions.
