Summary:Abstract A protective mouthguard including: a body formed of deformable materials, wherein the body is shaped to be worn by a subject as a mouthguard; one or more light emitting components embedded in the body, wherein each of the light emitting components is configured to emit light at a controlled wavelength externally of the body in a predefined direction, thereby to, in use, cause the emitted light to travel into body tissue of the subject; one or more light sensor components embedded in the body, wherein the light sensor components are positioned to, in use, sense light emitted from the one or more light emitting components, wherein that light is affected by interaction with the body tissue of the subject; and a microprocessor configured to (i) control operation of the one or more light emitting components; and (ii) receive data generated by the one or more light sensor components, thereby to enable processing of that data to generate one or more metric representative of the subject's physiological condition.
