The invention relates to a method for cleaning at least one breathing apparatus (112), wherein the breathing apparatus (112) comprises at least one breathing mask (114). The method comprises at least one pre-cleaning step, wherein the pre-cleaning step comprises the following sub-steps: a) providing the breathing apparatus (112) in an externally contaminated condition; b) providing at least one holder (126) for the breathing mask (114), wherein the holder (126) has at least one curved sealing surface (128); c) stretching the breathing mask (114) onto the holder (126) in such a way that at least one sealing lip (122) of the breathing mask (114) rests on the curved sealing surface (128) and closes off an interior space (124) of the breathing mask (114); d) introducing the holder (126) with the breathing mask (114) into a pre-cleaning chamber (150); and e) acting upon an external side (218) of the breathing mask (114) in the pre-cleaning chamber (150) with at least one pre-cleaning fluid (156). The method may further comprise at least one main cleaning step carried out after the pre-cleaning step, having the following sub-steps: i) detaching the breathing mask (114) from the holder (126); ii) introducing the breathing mask (114) into a main cleaning chamber (172); and iii) acting upon the breathing mask (114) including an interior side (216) of the breathing mask (114) that is facing the interior space (124) of the breathing mask (114) with at least one main cleaning fluid (186, 200).
