Summary:Abstract A lifting unit 10 for a loading dock 16 includes a movable platform 18. The platform 18 is movable relative to a fixed support 30 from a lowered position to a raised position. The movable platform 18 has a platform base defining a platform 5 floor 22. The lifting unit 10, including the movable platform 18 and the fixed support 30 is mountable on a substantially level support surface 12. The movable platform 18 is movable via one or more moving devices disposed wholly to a side of the platform base 22. This allows the combined thickness of the platform base in the lowered position and any portion of the fixed support 30 lying beneath the 10 platform base to define a low profile so that the platform floor 22 is substantially level with the support surface 12, or at least within approximately 80 to 85mm.
