Summary:A system and method for powering an electric vehicle on a road, the system comprising a generator configured to produce power, an inductive accumulator array for installation in a road configured to receive power from the generator, a receiver array of receiver coils for installation beneath a vehicle, each coil being configured to receive power from a corresponding accumulator coil installed in a road, wherein said receiver array is configured to provide excess power back to the accumulator coils, said excess power being providable to other vehicles by the accumulator array. The system further comprises a vehicle communications coil for location in a vehicle in front of the receiver array in the driving direction of the vehicle, and an accumulator communications unit configured to receive a signal from said vehicle communications coil and to operate corresponding accumulator sections to provide power to a receiver attached to the vehicle.
