Summary:Disclosed is a pretreatment method which enables the promotion of the enzymatic glycosylation of lignocellulose under relatively mild conditions by using a tree bark as a raw material and a smaller energy.  Specifically disclosed is a process for producing a saccharide from a tree bark raw material, which is characterized by comprising the following steps: an alkali treatment step of immersing the tree bark raw material in an aqueous alkali compound solution; a cutting treatment step of cutting the alkali-treated tree bark mechanically into fine pieces; and an enzymatic glycosylation step of glycosylating the finely cut tree bark with an enzyme.  Also disclosed is a ethanol production process.
