Summary:A composite composition comprises polymeric nanoparticles comprising as copolymerized units (wt.% based on the weight of the nanoparticles): multiethylenically unsaturated first monomer(s) (1-50), ethylenically unsaturated second monomer(s) (2-75), and monoethylenically unsaturated third monomer(s) (0-97); and clay nanoparticles. A composite composition comprises polymeric nanoparticles (PNPs) comprising as copolymerized units (wt.% based on the weight of the nanoparticles): multiethylenically unsaturated first monomer(s) (1-50), ethylenically unsaturated second monomer(s) (2-75), the second monomer bearing a group(s) from the set consisting of hydroxy, silyl, polyalkylene oxide, quat. ammonium, quat. phosphonium, amines, amine N-oxides, carboxylic acids, sulfur acids, phosphorus acids, or their salts, and monoethylenically unsaturated third monomer(s) (0-97), the nanoparticles having a mean diameter from 1-50 nm; and clay nanoparticles (CNPs). An independent claim is also included for a method of mixing the polymeric nanoparticles with clay particles to form the composition.
