Summary:A mechanical seal for sealing a shaft (2), which shaft is guided through a wall (6a) and rotates about the longitudinal axis (1) of said mechanical seal, contains a first ring arrangement (9), which is held in a sealed manner and rotationally fixed on the wall (6a), moves in the axial direction against springs (13) and rests with its sliding surface (21b; 21c) on the sliding surface (15a) of a second ring arrangement (15) which is held in a sealed manner and rotationally fixed on the shaft (2). At least on its sliding surface (15a), the second ring arrangement (15) consists of a material of high wear resistance with a modulus of elasticity of greater than 10 x 10 N/mm . The first ring arrangement (9), which is subjected radially externally to the fluid to be sealed, contains an annular body (9b) of a material having good sliding characteristics, with a modulus of elasticity of less than 10 x 10 N/mm , on which a sliding surface (21b) is formed. This body (9b) is tensioned between annular parts (9a; 9c), whose modulus of elasticity is greater than 10 x 10 N/mm and at least one (9c) of which forms a further annular sliding surface (21c), which directly bounds the sliding surface (21b) of the annular body (9b). In this way, a mechanical seal is produced which has a favourable geometry of the sliding surfaces even at high pressures and temperatures and hence has low leakage values and friction power loss. The said mechanical seal has emergency running characteristics and is suitable for sealing abrasive fluids.
