Summary:The binder according to the invention for water-based gloss paints contains, dispersed in an aqueous phase, particles of a multi-phase emulsion polymer which is built up from a) a core material having a glass transition temperature above 40 DEG C and b) a shell material having a glass transition temperature below 70 DEG C, but at least 20 DEG K below that of the core material. The particles have an average diameter of less than 200 nm. An emulsion polymer containing at least 4% by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and more than 80% by weight of one or more monomers of the group comprising styrene and alkyl esters of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid are involved in the construction of the shell material. Coatings produced with the binder are distinguished by a high blocking point.
