Summary:The invention relates to a forwardly tapering electric steam iron which can be operated by hand and which has an evaporation chamber (10) which can be supplied with water from a water tank and is connected to the atmosphere via steam outlet ports (11) made in a heatable iron sole (1) and which is adjacent to the iron sole (1) for the purpose of heating the evaporation chamber (10). The steam outlet ports (11) have a larger area in the region of the tip (44) of the iron sole than in the rear region of the iron sole (1), in order to ensure a better steam distribution to the material to be ironed.
