Summary:An insulating material of 0.1-0.4 g/cc density consists of at least 50 vol.% silica aerogel particles of 0.5-5mm dia. bonded together by (in)organic binder(s). Prodn. of the insulating material involves coating and/or mixing silica aerogel particles with binder and hardening the material in a mould. The aerogel particles are pref. hydrophobic particles of 1-4mm dia. The binder may be an inorganic binder selected from cement, gypsum, lime and water glass or may be an organic binder, e.g. reaction adhesive such as epoxy resin adhesive, reactive polyurethane adhesive, phenol-, resorcinol-, urea- or melamine-formaldehyde resin, silicone resin adhesive, polyimide or polybenzimidazole resin, a melt adhesive such as ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer or polyamide, or an aq. dispersion adhesive such as styrene-butadiene or styrene-acrylic ester copolymer. The binder content is pref. 5-30 vol.%.
