New copper (Cu) carbene complexes contain ligands comprising a 1,3-di(aralkyl) or -(hetero)aryl-imidazol(id)ine or corresponding bridged compound or oligomer of formula (I); G = an ethan-1,2-diyl or ethen-1,2-diyl group, which may be mono- or poly-substituted; B1 = 5-18 C aryl, 1-18 C alkyl, optionally containing O, N or S heteroatom(s), or 6-19 C aralkyl; B2 = an n-valent group with a total of 2-40 C; n = 1, 2 or 3.
