Summary:Prodn of alcohols and diols by hydrogenation of a corresp. unsatd. organic cpd. selected from esters, diesters and lactones comprises: (a) providing >= 2 hydrogenation zones, each contg a charge of a granular hydrogenation catalyst selected from Cu-contg. and Gp VIII metal-contg catalysts; (b) supplying to>= 1 of the hydrogenation zones, a vapours feed stream comprising a hydrogen-contg. gas and an unsatd. organic cpd. selected from 1-4C alkyl esters of 8-22C alkylcarboxylic acids, di-(1-4C) alkyl diesters of 4-16C dicarboxylic acids, gamma -butyrolactone and epsilon-caprolactone; (c) maintaining the hydrogenation zone at 150-350[deg]C and 150-2000 psia; (d) recovering a reaction prod. stream comprising an alcohol or diol; (e) supplying to >= 1 other hydrogenation zone a stream of hydrogen-contg. gas in order to reactivate the charge of hydrogenation catalyst; (f) supplying to the other hydrogenation zone, in a second phase of operation, a vaporous feed stream comprising a hydrogen-contg gas and the unsatd organic cpd.; (g) maintaining the hydrogenation zone at 150-350[deg]C and 150-200 psia; (h) recovering a reaction prod. stream comprising the alcohol or diol; and (i) supplying, in the second phase of operation, a stream of hydrogen-contg. gas to reactivate the charge of hydrogenation catalyst.
