Summary:The engine has an inlet channel (3) extending into a cylinder (2) through an inlet opening (7), and an inlet valve arranged in the region of the inlet opening. A bypass channel branches from the inlet channel upstream of a flow control unit and extends downstream of the control unit, where a flow axis (6`) of the bypass channel is arranged tangentially with respect to the cylinder in a region of intersection (10) in the inlet channel. A ratio of a normal distance (R) of the flow axis of the bypass channel with respect to a cylinder axis, to radius of the cylinder amounts to 0.6 to 0.9. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for operating internal combustion engine (2) an exhaust gas system with a catalytic converter.
