Summary:The prodn. of cyanuric acid (I) comprises cooling a gaseous mixt. of isocyanic acid (II) and ammonia from 300-480 degrees C to 200-300 degrees C, precipitating and isolating (I) by trimerisation of (II) at this temp. in a system designed for separating solids from gases, and recycling or reprocessing the unreacted gas mixt. Also claimed is prepn. of (I) coupled with a process for the prodn. of melamine by decomposition of urea. Pref. the starting gas mixt. contains 1-50 (pref. 3-30) vol% (II), and is obtd. by thermal decomposition of urea. (I) is pptd. at 230-280 degrees C, pref. in a hot gas filter, esp. a cyclone-type, tangentially fed hot gas filter with central filter inserts, pref. after cooling in a gas mixing chamber with the aid of cooling gas introduced through one or more further inlets.
