Summary: | The process entails the preparation of L(+)-tartaric acid from calcium tartrate by use of sulphuric acid in aqueous medium, characterized by the presence of a chelating agent from the group of N,N'-bis(o-hydroxy-m- sulphonylphenyl)-N,N'-methylenediamine-N-acetic acid or related compounds and/or by addition of water-miscible organic solvents from the group of alcohols, cyclic ethers, ketones or a corresponding mixture of all at temperatures between 0-30 degree C. The calcium sulphate suspension is initially treated with organic solvents, and then sulphuric acid is added and the deposited traces of calcium sulphate are removed, resulting in a clear solution of tartaric acid which can be crystallized. After concentration of the mother liquor to 20-50%, preferably between 35 and 45%, the tartaric acid is separated off and dried, resulting in L(+)- tartaric acid with a purity of more than 95% and with an optical rotation of greater than alpha D20 = 13.9 degree. |
