Summary:Conventional testing methods for the central engine mechanism of ready-assembled internal combustion engines are mostly time-consuming, and the individual defects can be detected only by trained testers from the running noise of the engines. According to the invention, it is now proposed that the "valve drive", "piston" and "crank shaft drive" subassemblies of the central engine mechanism be subjected, one after the other, to automatic testing, structure-borne sound signals and/or oil- pressure signals which are typical of defects and can be assigned to the individual subassemblies being attained in operating conditions of the internal combustion engine which can be determined and predefined for each subassembly, and these signals being compared with the signals of defect-free internal combustion engines, as a result of which the overall test duration is shortened significantly. In addition, equipment for carrying out this method is described, with which the predefinable operating parameters in the individual, successive test stages can be set automatically, and the measured signals (I-IV) obtained from a number of pick-ups 6, 15 are evaluated.
