Summary:The subject matter of the invention is the use of an X 120 Mn 12 or X 120 Mn 13 steel having a composition of 1.2 to 1.3% carbon, in particular 1.23% carbon, and 11.5 to 13.5% manganese, in particular 12.5% manganese, the rest iron and normal iron associates, for the production of a wearing layer on frogs and wheel crossover regions of rail turnouts. The application of the wearing layer to a parent body made of readily weldable steel, in particular with not more than 0.24% C, not more than 0.04% P or S, not more than 0.65% Si and not more than 1.7% Mn, is expediently effected by explosive cladding or composite rolling.
